This program will benefit LMFT, LPCC, LEP and LCSW licensees and pre licensees by assisting in effectively promoting client safety when suicidal ideation, intent, or behaviors demonstrate a gross disregard for the safety of clients is suspected or stated. Included is a discussion on promoting wellness collaboratively and the importance of non-stigmatizing language when discussing suicide risk.  Assembly Bill (AB) 89, which was signed by Governor Brown on September 1, 2017 and requires psychologists attain six hours of suicide risk management. Suffice to say, Marriage and Family Therapist will likely be required to take a similar course to maintain a basic set of competencies when clients present as an eminent risk to oneself as a result of symptoms associated with mental illness. This presentation assists in enhancing MFT/CFT's with some basic competencies when managing suicide risk with clients.


Includes: Breakfast and meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Sacramento Valley Chapter of California Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT) CAMFT CEPA CE Provider #62279 is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor Continuing Education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. SVC-CAMFT maintains the responsibility for the program and all its content.  CE Credit will be awarded after the completion of the course via email in exchange for a completed course evaluation form.

No CEs will be awarded to persons arriving late or leaving early. Partial CE credit will not be awarded. 
 
Workshop Information:
A unifying theme across various systemic theoretical orientations includes conceptualizing mental illness as a phenomenon that exists as part of a broader ecology within and between relational interactions. This course is about how to conceptualize suicide risk systemically and how to work with various continuums of care to promote mental wellness. It covers critical warning signs, risk factors, brief intervention, and a basic safety plan.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand how and when to discuss suicide risk with clients and their significant others. 
  2. Summarize risk factors from warning signs.
  3. Plan with clients and their families in developing a safety plan when appropriate.


Presenter Bio:
David is a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.David completed his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) examining explanatory factors associated with successful, session-level advanced brief strategic paradoxical intervention. At his private practice in Folsom, David specializes in anxiety-related disorders and couples therapy/family-based treatment. Additionally, he sees a variety of clients struggling with mood disorders, men’s issues, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Along with research and private practice, David manages a team of mental health workers at two emergency departments within Placer County for Sierra Mental Wellness Group. He designed and implemented Sierra’s Continuing Education division including accreditation as a California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) approved continuing education provider. He is responsible for developing cutting-edge training and tools which he delivers across Sierra’s interagency divisions. David is a nationally certified trainer in Assessing and Managing Suicidal Risk (AMSR), an evidence-based protocol for assessing suicidal risk developed by The Suicide Prevention Resource Center and The American Association of Suicidology. David is a third generation native of California. He enjoys paddle boarding; traveling; and studying exotic animals within safe, humane settings.
