News from the BBS

NEW GRADUATES: TIPS ON REGISTRATION, SUPERVISION, AND STAYING INFORMED AS YOU PROGRESS TOWARD LICENSURE

Graduation is a time of new beginnings. Your journey toward becoming licensed is entering its next stage and there is a great deal of information to absorb about requirements and processes. Getting and staying informed can be a challenge, but is crucial in order to avoid obstacles, both big and small, on your journey. One of the most important steps you can take to stay informed is to sign up for the Board’s email subscribers list. You may also follow the Board on Facebook and Twitter.

Registration as an Associate

Apply within 90 days of your degree award date in order to be credited with any post degree experience completed before your associate registration number is issued by the Board. For applicants graduating after January 1, 2020, there are fingerprinting requirements that must be met in order to qualify under the 90-day rule. See article on page 8 for more information. Be sure to read and follow all application instructions carefully. If possible, submit all required documents together with your application to avoid delays in processing. An initial associate registration is good for a maximum of six years and must be renewed annually. Make sure to renew in a timely manner as experience hours will only accrue while your registration is current.

Exam Required for Registration Renewal

Renewal of your associate registration is required yearly (your expiration date will be printed on your registration certificate). You are required to take the California Law and Ethics Exam in order to renew. You do not have to pass in order to renew, but you will have to take a 12-hour Law and Ethics course in order to take the exam again during your next renewal period. Be sure to plan ahead—apply for and take the exam early to ensure that you will be able to renew on time. Supervised Experience

There are many requirements pertaining to supervised experience that are critical for you to learn about. The resources listed below will help you. Here are just a few important tips: • In order for experience hours to count toward licensure, you must work under a qualified supervisor and comply with all registration and supervision requirements specified in law.

  • Registrants are not legally permitted to open their own office or to bill clients directly—either of these actions would be considered unlicensed practice and is subject to disciplinary action.
  • Registrants must be an employee or volunteer and cannot be paid under a “1099” (as an independent contractor).
  • Make sure that your supervisor signs of on your weekly log of experience hours on a regular basis.
  • Do your best to complete your experience hours within a six-year period. The Board cannot accept hours of experience that are older than six years from the date the Board receives your licensure application.

Resources

The most important section of the Board’s website is the “Applicant” tab. After you have selected your license type, select “Forms/Pubs” to access the following:

  • Various forms and applications
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Supervisor qualifications
  • Guide to supervision
  • BBS statutes and regulations

The “Exams” tab of the BBS website is also helpful, and includes the Law and Ethics Exam FAQ.
